Addiction and Life beyond.. — June 21, 2015

Addiction and Life beyond..

“it’s all in the genes” An explanation for the way things are that does not threaten the way things are. Why should someone feel unhappy or engage in antisocial behavior when that person is living in the freest most prosperous nation on earth? It can’t be the system. There must be a flaw in the wiring somewhere’

An Article From The New Yorker about our avoidance to social problems that cause addictions and problems in society.

A Road Less Traveled by Robert Frost —

A Road Less Traveled by Robert Frost

‘What does a life of total dedication to the truth mean? It means first of all, a life of continuous and never ending stringent self examination. We know the world only through our relationship to it. Therefore to know the world , we must not only examine it but we must simultaneously examine the examiner’

‘Since mentally healthy human beings must grow, and since giving up or loss of the old self is an integral part of the process of mental and spiritual growth, depression is normal and basically healthy phenomenon. It becomes abnormal and unhealthy only when something interferes with the giving up process, with result to that the depression is prolonged and cannot be resolved by completion of process’

‘Mature awareness is possible only when I have digested and compensated for the biases and prejudice’s that are the residue of my personal history. Awareness of what presents itself to me involves a double movement of attention:silencing the familiar and welcoming the strange. Each time I approach a strange object, person or event, I have a tendency to let my present needs, past experience, or expectations for the future determine what I will see.

Should Greece Modernize? — June 20, 2015

Should Greece Modernize?

Greeks chose poverty, let them have their way says Francesco Giavazzi.

Francesco feel’s its “pretty clear” that Greece  is concentrating on patronage rather the modernity and apparently Germany is spending too much time negotiating with them, therefore he thinks that Greece should be out of the EU. Its not quite clear how they would appease the EU other then concentrating on ‘Modernizing’ Which in Francesco’s opinion would resolve the world of problems for Greece, as of course modernization has resolved the global issues we face today.

It irks me that economist’s always have these opinions,  yet for years and years have still not been able to stop the downturns and austerity, what is the point of going to university and coming up with the same system over and over again. Imagine in physics or any other field of education continuing an experiment for a over a 100 years and never making any changes? It just doesn’t work.

So.. moving back to the advise Francesco  think’s that Greece should concentrate on Unemployment and Immigration and thus become modernized.

I say let Greece be poor in wealth but rich in soul.

If Greece turns to Modernity today:

Greece could start designing pointless app’s or find new in-genius ways to sell crap to people on the web, they could join the smart phone revolution (IE how to sell more pointless products and apps and marketing designed for Mobile phones instead). Maybe they could find new way’s to grow food from seeds that only last a year and have less nutritional value or keeping millions of animals and killing them in horrific ways for cheap meat full of chemicals to ensure the further rise of obesity and general unhealthiness. There is another opening for designing clothes and products and trying to find the ‘the best’ third world country that will offer up their children to spend their lives in a dark factory to ensure maximum profit’s. Maybe they could join in with “finding” new illnesses to ‘create’ new drugs cause that’s a profit maker. Maybe they could be heartless and join in with creating wars and then not help the people in boats who’s homes they had destroyed in the process. Maybe they should become cold and focused on profit.

Though I do agree with Francesco leaving the EU could be path to Freedom. So we shall see what the future brings and hopefully with it some humility and kindness. As the Indian said, one day you will realize you cannot eat money.

That’s modernization in a nut shell (its not all that bad some people are doing good but those people ain’t thinking about capitalism or aspiration).

My hope is that Greece does not modernize, instead it remains close to the land, growing real food and supporting its people that way, maybe even create more philosophers and artists as well. It would make me happy because at least somewhere in the world there will be lands that are untainted, humble simple and a joy to be.

Success and Growth — June 11, 2015

Success and Growth

” Optimists believe they will succeed, but also believe they have to make success happen”

I found Heidi Halverson who writes blogs for Psychology Today and has written several books on the subject of success.

Heidi research that there was a period of time when children were told they could do anything they wanted to and they would be good at everything – it turns out that they miss the link that is you can be good at anything but you also need to work at it. Seems so simple, but how many of us stop and feel frustrated because we are not good at something, because we don’t know. Its all about growth you can’t just visualize being good and something you have to find the tools to make it happen, the people who can help you understand the strategies to move you forward,

Radio 4 recently aired a topic titled ‘Brain science and education’ and here they talked about the myths of the neuro science and the assumption  years ago when scientist based their findings on animal brains and thought the brain doesn’t grow beyond childhood it stops growing, however recent studies have show this incorrect  the brain has been shown to increase connections between nerons, and as far as I remember create new connections. A famous taxi cab study shows that the hippocampus is enlarged in London taxi drivers thought to be an effect of the extensive training, in contrast London bus drivers who do not have such training haven’t the effect.

Carol Dweck a professor at Stanford passionately tells us

” The growth of your brain is in your own hands”

I have experience myself at the age of 33, of growth. I  was average  at school and  didn’t pursue an academic route.  However, though  life and travel I’ve discovered and adapted and learnt new ways, improved my knowledge and skills something that takes allot of time for someone with a nerodevelopmental disorder. Notable changes started happening when I focused more on learning and I noticed a complete change in a matter of years. Let me just add that people with dyspraxia and dyslexia or ADHD are not always behind, they will get there with perseverance, patience and time. If this wasn’t the case, I’ld still be struggling to tie my shoelaces, crash into curbs on the bike and be unable to tell the time.

Losing less stuff: I’ve been more present, paying more attention that means I lose less things. When I was a child I was losing things all the time and realized this wasn’t a very happy situation for me, especially going home and having to tell my mum!

A more philosophical in my way of thinking, meeting new people who debated and discussed through observations I learnt how to debate, this was never taught to me at school. I just sat there watched and then joined in after a few more evenings, at first I didn’t have a clue and then over time I just got into it.. and couldn’t stop!

Increased  focus and better reflexes: Simply by living in Amsterdam and riding a bike. Firstly I was nervous and crashing into everything the next month had developed a better spatial awareness. You’ll only understand if you have seen the craziness of the streets in Amsterdam. **2017 addition** I have been brave enough to ride a bike in London and I’m pretty confident now.

Deeper Reading and Understanding of Text:  After taking Modern & Contemporary American Poetry from University of Pennsylvania, I understand the benefit of taking the time to read text, understanding deeper concepts, learning through peer evaluation and online discussions really changed the way I viewed education. I’m not perfect by any means but definitely progressed further in my critical thinking which was not very developed

Developing New Stratigies for Learning: This I’ve recently started developing this due to games.  I played games before, yet only now I realized that I was doing the same thing over and over again and feeling depressed that I kept losing – This time I changed my mind, I noticed what was working and I tried different ways to to see if it made any difference. Working on timed games enabled this ability to develop faster and at last I was winning were before I would give up! I realized that When you can reflect and act quickly making small changes here and there you succeed faster.

This is a short list and I realize there is probably allot I’ve missed out. What I do know is in only a few years I’ve discovered ways to learn faster but also deeper, retaining more knowledge but also connecting meanings and my own connections to. Over time this has its made my life more enriched and less depressive

Newly added section: 2017 age of 35.

2 years at university I’ve found that:

I managed to finish and start a piece of work

I’ve successfully written 4,000 words although  my brain couldn’t stretch to an actual argument I was pleased to have finished it on time and couldn’t believe I had managed to write so many words.

Managed to battle procrastination (still ongoing but getting better)

Managed to develop a better writing style. I can at least understand to write in short sentences. Grammar is a whole other story.

Managed to get a few firsts! Whoop!

I’ve learnt to visualise work in my mind, in order to organise it on the page.

I’ve managed to meet all my deadlines. Success!

I know my brain has changed in some ways because when I read a novel I can remember what happened in the start of the story and can finally see the different connections and predict what happens next, this is not something I was ever able to do. Evidence that something is happening and changing.

I will update again in a year!

My Principles of Success —

My Principles of Success

Today is the third week at home after quitting my job and I’ve trying to uncover how to be the person I want to be and what the true meaning of success is for me.
These past weeks have been sent, watching Ted, Youtube, and listening to the Great Courses Audio books trying to bring in the context of the reason for my dissatisfaction with my work life and discovering the true meaning of success and motivation.

I wanted to share some principles below of what I think is needed in order to be fulfilled in life and I hope to use this blog in order to expand on concepts and ideas so that others can benefit from my path of growth,

Principles to Success:

– Motivation: This is  often something many of us struggle with, and its simple create a goal but a goal that has meaningful purpose

– Life Purpose: Find out what your life purpose is by understanding your chore values enables motivation and focus to fall into place leading to a state of flow or what some say getting in the zone.

– Focus and Determination: lead by motivation which is lead by meaningful purpose.

– Psychology of Self: Understanding yourself. Its time to reflect on how you react to your circumstances and your environment. Do you make yourself accountable for your actions? Do you learn from your mistakes or do you fall with your mistakes?

– Creativity and Conformity: It is said to stem from Darwinism that is in the evolutionary nature of ourselves I learnt that both creativity and conformity aid in the progress of our tribe –  Creativity enables us to be sensitive to our changing environment and adapt whilst conformity holds us all together, creates learning and enables replication of ideas.

– Strategic Thinking: the ability to think a few steps ahead and make decisions today that enable you to move in the right direction and open doors to the places you want to be.

– Managing emotions and Negative thoughts: Quite often we are held back and lose our health due to stress, this was one of my biggest issues but sometimes what we perceive to be ‘stress’ could all be in our heads. Stress is a big issue and many jobs require that you manage stress well or your are stress resistant. I hope to talk more about stress in the blog as I think its something allot of us struggle with.

– Connection and grounding: Being connected to others, not judging, always motivating and help each other through collaboration gives a deeper sense of well being and purpose. Grounding I discovered which relates to stress. When stressed your mind and body are out of balance  grounding is about getting back the balance so everything in your mind and body works in harmony.

– Learning: understand what you want to do next and finding out how to gain the tools for learning. Mastering something is only achieved through a period of time and in little steps.  I like the thought of having a tool box and adding small skills here and there, I really think will push progress to success.

So those are my current principles whilst listening to Ted Talks,  videos on YouTube and the Great Courses : Stress management, Creativity tool box and how we learn on and looking to my environment.
